National Maritime Day, 2025

On May 22, 2025, President Trump issued a proclamation designating the day as National Maritime Day to commemorate the significant historical event of the S.S. Savannah’s first transoceanic voyage in 1819.

The proclamation highlights the vital role of the United States Merchant Marine in national defense, noting their contributions during times of war, including World War II, when they faced high casualty rates while supporting military operations.

In addition to their defense role, merchant mariners are recognized for their contributions to the American economy, facilitating global trade and supporting various industries.

The proclamation also mentions renewed efforts to enhance American maritime dominance through an Executive Order aimed at investment and training in shipbuilding and mariner education.
