White House Initiative to Promote Excellence and Innovation at Historically Black Colleges and Universities

The White House Initiative for HBCUs

The White House has launched a new initiative aimed at promoting excellence and innovation at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This initiative seeks to enhance the capacity of HBCUs to deliver high-quality education and improve student opportunities through collaboration with various sectors, including private foundations and educational associations. The key goals include increasing financial support, fostering professional development for students, and ensuring that HBCUs can effectively compete for federal funding and resources.

To implement this initiative, an Executive Director will be appointed. The initiative will also work in conjunction with the President’s Board of Advisors on HBCUs, which consists of representatives from multiple sectors. The Board will provide guidance on implementing the HBCU PARTNERS Act and assist in facilitating partnerships that strengthen HBCUs. Additionally, the initiative addresses challenges related to student success, retention, and campus infrastructure by promoting best practices and sharing valuable information within the HBCU community.

An annual progress report will be submitted to the President to assess the impact of the federal government’s efforts on HBCUs and to offer recommendations for improvement. This initiative builds on previous efforts to support HBCUs and aims to position them as vital contributors to America’s educational landscape and workforce development. The overarching goal is to ensure that HBCUs can continue to serve as key institutions in advancing educational equity and opportunity for all students.
